Ice Master History

The history of the Ice Master World Cup in the Daone Valley

Daone Valley and its vocation for ice climbing

Ice climbing in the Daone Valley goes all the way back to 1979, when the first climbers ascended the Leno waterfall which they then baptised «La regina del lago», the Queen of the Lake. Nowadays this is the classic outing in Daone, the most spectacular and popular line in the valley. In 1989 Placido Corradi from Daone, with the help of some ice climbers from nearby Verona and Brescia, organised the first «Pareti di Cristallo» in the Daone Valley. It proved to be a great success, both for the number of routes climbed and for the fact that it was something hitherto unheard of in the eastern Alps.

In 2000 the Ice Climbing World Cup came to life, a circuit of six international competitions in some of the most famous ice climbing areas in the world. And so the Daone Valley decided to embark on this adventure, creating a Committee headed by Candido Ghezzi who, one year later, enabled Daone to join the most important UIAA tour. This culminated in 2005 with the organisation of the Ice Bouldering World Championship. As of 2006 Romolo Ghezzi guides the event as president of the Committee.
